This past week!

This past week was probably one of my best weeks so far! There were no tears shed this week! That is a huge improvement! I truly believe it is because of all of your prayers. I'm not saying it went flawless or that the students were great but I'm seeing a change in my class. The relationships with my students are getting much better. They are slowly learning to trust me and I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of this job.

God is doing amazing things in my students! I can see him at work!! (which has definitely been my prayer for this year). For example: one of my roughest and toughest basketball players has started to be my helper in getting the class to quiet down. Another student who LOVES to act out in class has been more aware of his behavior and wrote on his test the other day that I was his best teacher! That warmed my heart so much! He is a student who typically makes all F's on his test but he made a 91 on his test this week!!!! He is truly the definition of a BROCKSTAR!

I love to see what God is doing in my class and I pray that it continues! I want all my kids to be on the honor roll this semester and I want them to all pass the EOG (state final exam) with a 3 or 4 the first time!

Thank you so much for the prayers! You are all in my prayers!

First Day Back

Today was a challenge! It was full of excitement and explosions (literally). I had a student throw one of those pop firecracker things in my class during my lesson. I guess I thought today was going to be COMPLETELY different right off the bat. It was pretty discouraging to have to write up 2 student before 9am. My sister is right, I need patience for God's timing to change what is happening in my classroom. Just because I think everything should be 100% better doesn't mean that is going to happen!

There were some positives of the day:
  • I didn't cry after school
  • A student asked if she could stay after tomorrow to help me around my classroom
  • My third block didn't make me yell today
Things are going to get better! I'm not going to give up! I just need to be more patient and trusting of God's Timing.

Happy New Year!!!

It is a New Year and all of my students have someone praying for them! God has provided MORE than 57 people to pray for one student for the rest of the year!!! He is SUCH a PROVIDER!! PRAISE THE LORD!!! I'm still looking for people willing to praying for my students because we can never have too many people praying!

I truly trust and believe that God is going to change things up in my classroom this semester!

My hope for this year is the opportunity to really get invested in the lives of my students to motivate them to strive for success! My daily prayer is that God will speak through me to my students and that I can show them God's love through patience and understanding while being and effective mentor and teacher. I pray that God will do BIG things in my classroom and that I will trust him every step of the way!

How can I be praying for you? Send me your prayer request in an e-mail, text, Facebook message, dove, or any other way of communication. I would love to be praying for you as well!

Thank you so much and this is going to be a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Praying for my students!

I've attempted to update my blog several times in the past couple of months but I've only accumulated half written depressing blog post that I've hesitated to post. To sum it up real quickly for those who don't know: I'm an 8th grade science teacher in rural Eastern North Carolina and it has been a hard first semester but I have a lot of HOPE that things are going to turn around.

God has smacked me in the face to help me realize that I'm not trusting Him in my classroom. When I get asked how teaching is going I typically answer with: "I'm miserable" or "I hate my life." These responses stem from a lack of control in my classroom which leads to disrespect from my students and a lack of patience from me! It has truly been a mess and it is because I've really tried to take control and I've not been relying on God for help. There needs to be a lot more prayer for my students and for my school so transformational change can occur! I want to see every student of mine on a path for college! I want to see each and every one of them doing something HUGE with their lives in 10 years. I want each of them to dream big and strive for those dreams each and every day. I want all of my students to strive for 90% or higher on every test, paper, and assignment they do and not to just settle for a D. I want an unstoppable passion and motivation for learning to run through all the student at the Middle school and to move out to everyone in the community. Without God's help nothing transformational is going to happen. If I'm just relying on myself to help these students then they are truly out of luck!

This is where I need your help:
God's put an idea on my heart! I have a total of 57 students. I need 57 (or more) volunteers to commit to praying for one student for the rest of the school year.
If you are interested in praying for one of my students e-mail me at bebrock48@gmail.com and I'll send you information about your student. I'll give you some specific things that you can think about when praying for your student and I'll update you on ways that I see God moving in their life.

"And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."
-John 14:13-14

To protect the privacy of my students I'll provide first names and general prayer request.

Even though these students can cause me to want to pull out my hair and run away some days, I still love and care for them so DAGGUM much!!! I want to see them succeed and I'm NOT EVER going to give up on these Hooligans! I truly believe that with God's help this classroom will experience some GREAT things!

Thank you for all the prayers it means a lot!

Eastern North Carolina!

I safely got to Rocky Mount, NC for Induction which is basically where we get familiar to the area, let us know what to expect and where we meet our fellow corps members that will be serving in the same region. Everyone is really nice here! I'm loving my fellow corps members!! There are about 108 of us. I have a great roommate and I've met some really cool people here! A group of us hung out and watched the big Miami Heat vs. the Dallas Mavericks game last night! That was a fun time of bonding and it was good to see Dallas win! Today we are driving to different parts of our region to see what life is like around here. We also get to go into some classroom and see how their classes are managed. My group is checking out Bertie county which is close to the coast near Edenton. I'm stoked to see this area because they told us about the awesome improvement that they have seen in this area over the past few years. Then we are eating come BBQ (PRAISE THE LORD!!) I'm really excited about embarking on this new adventure! The only thing that I'm nervous about now is still taking the Praxis on Saturday... so if you could keep that in your prayers that would be AMAZING!

Day 16 - A picture of someone who inspires you.

There are SOOO many people who inspire/encourage/ and impact my life. I chose 3 of those people who really inspired me through college! College was a time of HUGE growth for me. I wrestled with God about a lot of stuff that was going on in my life. I basically went from a boy-crazy high school senior who was seeking fulfillment from things that could only provide temporary satisfaction to a person whose focus was on glorifying God and figuring out what is looks like to have a relationship with Jesus. This does not mean that I'm good at this at all, because it is definitely daily struggle, but it is TOTALLY worth striving for! God did some really big things in my life during this time and he used a lot of people to help me with this change! These three women that I'm going to focus on are Brooke Currie, Caitlin VanScott, and Dr. Sleigh!

The first person that God really used in my life is Brooke Currie! GOODNESS!!! Brooke hated me when she first met me! haha! I love telling that story! When she first met me (while I was visiting my big sister at Winthrop) I was a CRAZY immature, young, little. high schooler who was EXTREMELY boy-crazy and bounced around all the time! But when I actually came to Winthrop as a student, she didn't hate me as much! I tried to NOT get involved with a campus ministry my freshmen year. My plan was to stay away from them because that is what my sister did when she went to Winthrop, and if I was going to get involved with one, then it was NOT going to be Campus Crusade! I even planned my work schedule at the same time as Cru so I couldn't go to the weekly meeting! Another reason I didn't want to get involved in one was because I wanted to do what I wanted to do in college. I came to college as a really stubborn freshmen who wanted the fun/typical/as seen on tv type college experience! But God had a different idea! He put a lot of Campus Crusade people in my life and they were determined on getting me involved! This is when Brooke came into my life! She had an interest in my life and had a desire to get my life going in the right direction. She invited me over and over to the Bible study that her and Katie Simmons (my awesome roommate from the Cabin) were leading. I was determined not to go! But they were insistent! Brooke would call, text and drag me to Bible study! This is where I really got plugged into an AWESOME community who cared for each other, who shared God's love with each other, and who had some really great times! James smacked us all in the face! We were called Goodness! This Bible Study seriously challenged me and what I believed! Brooke would specifically force me to contribute to the group and really ask awesome questions to get to the bottom of what I believed! Brooke was also my discipler, she would meet with me once a week and talk to me about life, Jesus, Psychology and so much other stuff! It was awesome to have an older friend/mentor/role model who really poured into me and cared about my walk with the Lord!! Brooke is one of those great friends who is really honest with you. She had a huge impact on my views on dating and my relationship with Jesus! I'm so thankful that Brooke Currie is in my life. She has such a huge heart for children and God works through her in amazing ways to impact children and the people around her! One day she is going to own an AWESOME camp that I totally want to work at! :) God totally put her in my life to put me in the right direction, to really challenge me and to help me grow! Brooke still has an impact on my life and I'm so excited to living closer to her next year!

Caitlin Freaking Amazing VanScott!!! So when Brooke graduated Caitlin VanScott became a Campus Crusade staff member at Winthrop. She was my next discipler! She totally thought I insane when we first met! (I'm really bad with first impressions!) I completely freaked her out by running up to her and giving her a huge hug and telling her that we were going to be best friends and I was so glad that she was at our campus! Caitlin helped me to really understand the Gospel! I'm pretty sure that we went through every tool that Cru provides and I learned SO much! After I really understood the Gospel, then Caitlin taught me how to share it with others. I also learned how to set boundaries with my time and not to over commit, which is still a struggle! She also encourages me to find time to enjoy with God. I learned a lot about conflict resolution. I also learned a lot about explaining myself in more detail and just being more honest with people. Tim Keller kicked our butts along with 1 Thessalonians! I learned that there is more than one John in the Bible! Caitlin likes to push me out of my comfort zone, but she's always there for support! She influenced me to go to NYC (which would not of been my first choice) but I ended up loving it... for the most part! She has been an awesome role model. She has heard about everything that has happened in my life and has helped me through a lot of stuff! God uses Caitlin in AMAZING ways! She has been a fantastic staff member on Winthrop's Campus. She has had such a HUGE impact on the women that she has been in contact with at Winthrop, Charlotte, New York, Santa Cruz, and where ever she goes! It is so great to see God working in her and through her. We learned that you should not stand too close to the "Starry Night" painting in the MoMa. We also spent a year hanging out a Starbucks every single week! Caitlin has helped me through A LOT! I'm so glad to call VanScott my friend!

Dr. Sleigh!!!! Oh My Goodness, where to start?!?! This woman is AMAZING! Anyone who has had Dr. Sleigh for a professor knows this to be true! She has impacted so many students at Winthrop University. She gives a 150% to her job! Her work ethic is astonishing! She gives so much of her time, knowledge and compassion to her students! I have never had a professor who cares for their students and much as she does! She cares so much that she is always trying to pair her students up with someone special! :) Dr. Sleigh loves the Lord SOOOO much! We spent a good amount of time talking about Jesus in her office! It is so great to have a professor who loves the Lord and who allows the Lord to work through her. She is so conscience of the example that she sets for her students. I'm so honored to of had her for a professor! She loves her students with the love the gets from God! I saw her as a second mom at Winthrop (I even asked her if she would adopt me!) It is awesome to see her interact with her two daughters because you can tell how much she loves them. She inspires me to one day be a loving mom, a caring teacher, and a person who strives to glorify God in all that I do! I cherish the time that I got to spend with her because I learned so much about life, God, Psychology, and so much more! Her biological psychology class rocked my world, I don't think I've ever learned so much in any other class! Her passion for psychology gets her students excited about psychology. Dr. Sleigh is such a wonderful role model! She deserves every award in the world for being such a FANTASTIC professor, mom, and human being! I'm so honored to have had Dr. Sleigh as a professor and I can't wait to go back to Rock Hill and visit her and the family!

These 3 women are all Rock Stars! They allow God to work through them to impact others. I could not ask for better role models! God has used so many more people in my life! I am truly blessed with amazing people that God has put in my life! I could not ask for a better community of friends who inspire and encourage me in my walk with the Lord!

Day 15 - A picture of something you want to do before you die.

I've got a really long list of things that I want to do before I die.

Here is a bit of my list:
  • Ride a Camel

  • Eat a whole funnel by myself

  • Do extreme sports like bungee jumping, hang gliding, sky diving!!
  • Go see the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in NYC

There are a bunch of other things...

Day 14 - A picture of someone you could never imagine your life without.

I could literally never imagine my life without this person because
she has been there from day one!

"Sisters, Sisters, There were never such devoted sisters!"

That person is my older sister Katherine Amanda Brock. From a young age she was bossing me around, as seen above! Katie has been there through everything. She knows all my secrets. She knows how to piss me off, cheer me up, make me laugh, and how to make me cry.

"Having Katie as a sister is really cool! haha!"
-Brittany Brock

We have been through so much together. I could not ask for a better Best Friend. We can make each other extremely angry but within 15 minutes we will be laughing together. We have games that only we understand. She has been the best role model for my life. I probably would not be where I am today if it wasn't for Katie. God had a great plan when he paired us together. I can't wait for the memories that we will make in the future!

I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness.
-- Emily Dickinson
(I have NO idea what this quote means, but it is from Emily Dickinson... so that's impressive!)

There is no way to truly express how much my sister means to me.
I love this young lady SOOOO freaking much.

Post-Graduation Adventures So Far...

So obviously I'm not the BEST at keeping up with blogs! It has taking me a couple of months to get through the 30 day blog challenge... and I'm still not done! But I'm trying to get better! I'm going to eventually try to finish this challenge, but I'm also going to use this blog to keep everyone updated on my Post-Graduation adventures! (upon request from the WONDERFUL library ladies!)

Post-Graduation Adventures so far...
  • Went to D.C. for Katie's graduation- Katie graduated from seminary in the National Freaking Cathedral! She always out does me! haha! It was really great and I'm super proud of her! Now we can call her Rev.! THAT'S IMPRESSIVE! While we were in DC we went to Georgetown and we went to Georgetown Bakery where DC cupcakes is filmed and we didn't even have to wait in line! We also went to a Baltimore Orioles baseball game. We were SO close to the field! That was AWESOME! We had bunches of fun, but I'm really glad that we got to spend quality time with Katie's Maryland Family (the Johnson's) They are awesome and the Brock Family GREATLY appreciates them for taking care of my sister!
  • New York Summer Project Reunion- This was in Wilmington! We had a BLAST catching up with everyone! Lauren Birch and Kenny came all the way from Missouri and we just had a FANTASTIC time hanging out! I love those people SOOO much!

  • Moving out of the Cabin- This was the hardest part of the whole Post Gradation Adventures! There were tears shed (by me). I had 2 FANTASTIC years in the Cabin and I'm so blessed that I got to live with Grace and Katie!

Teach For America Update:
  • I'm leaving for Induction (which is getting us accustomed to life in Eastern North Carolina) on June 7th. This is when I'll meet the rest of my team and my bosses.
  • I take the Praxis on June 11th. This means that if I don't pass this exam then I won't be a teacher!!! So I'm pretty nervous about passing this because I'm definitely not a strong test taker. Prayers would definitely be appreciated!
  • After the Praxis we are all driving straight down to Cleavland, Mississippi (15 hours) for our 5 week Boot Camp Training. We will be at Delta State University. From June 13 (my 22nd Birthday)- July 17th
  • Then after training we will be back in Eastern North Carolina to find housing and get ready for school to start
Now...
  • I'm waiting to hear back from my interview that I had with a school in Gaston, NC (near the Va border) . This was for a AP psychology position, which would be FANTASTIC, but we will see if I get if or not. They also need a Women's Soccer Coach which would be AWESOME!
  • I'm studying hardcore for the Praxis
  • Doing a bunch of work that I have to do before I leave for training!
  • Trying to find teacher clothes and getting ready for my life to drastically change
So I'm pretty busy! I'll try my hardest to keep updating.

Day 13 - A picture of your favorite band or artist.

I really like music! My favorite kind of music is really chill/beach like music. Which is odd because I have a pretty upbeat personality. I think it just balances me out! Even though I love music, I just never know the artist's names. So if you are ever riding in the car with me and you ask me "who sings this?" I will probably tell you that "I don't know... but I love this song!" I do know the names of my most favorite artist/band. The weird thing is that most of them start with the letters "J" or "B" Such as:

Joni Mitchell- She is great! She is definitely in my super top favorites! I really fell in love with her while rooming with Grace McClellan! We would open the window of room 226 in Margaret Nance and listen to Joni Mitchell while making huge plans for our lives! "Joni Mitchell is the woman who taught your cold English wife how to feel."- Guess what movie this is from? Hint: It is one of my favorites!!!

Jason Mraz- is another guy who I really fell in love with while living with Grace! I'm going to take credit for introducing Grace to Jason because I burned his CD for her before she went to his concert and then she fell in love and went to a few of his concerts then got to meet him!! (I'm still Jealous!) I have a fun concert experience from when I saw him in Charlotte (June 2009) and it got rained out but we watched him in a super cold concert hall because we were soaked! Then I saw him again in July! It was great! I love him!

Jack Johnson- He is just great! He is the example of chill/beach music!

Bruce Springsteen- I LOVE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN!!! He is just straight up American! My Dad and I used to hardcore jam out to The Boss when I was younger. Dad would draw/paint and I would watch him while listening to Springsteen! I literally thought that "Born to Run" was written for me because I used to love to run! haha! I love this guy!

AND THE....

Beach Boys- My mom got me into the Beach Boys! I just love them! They are a lot of fun! :)
